課程概述

This semester we will explore the topic of "monster." We will first discuss the concept of "monster" through the gothic tradition and then proceed to its cultural significance both as a concept that challenges the dominant cultural values AND as a cultural commodity that is easily subsumed under the logic of late capitalism. The first part of the course will center on "vampires" whereas in the second half of the semester we will read Mary Shelley's masterpiece Frankenstein and discuss the monstrosity that the work tries to convey. It is the instructor's intention to relate these two popular monsters to contemporary cultural milieu and tease out their cultural significance respectively.

課程目標
To enhance students’ ability to read novels and cultivate their sensitivity to contemporary cultural issues.
課程要求
Punctual attendance; journal writing (2); group presentation; active participation in class.
